Welcome to Tui Class Olivia

The latest person to join Tui class is Olivia. Her big brother Joesph and her big sister Maggie introduced her to the whole school at Mondays school prayer. It was a great day for Olivia, she was the Star of the Day and she went up at our mini assemble to receive her welcome certificate and again with Joe to have Happy Birthday sung to them.

Here's Olivia with her new maths buddy Bezalel

Feast Day at Sacred Heart

On Friday we celebrated Sacred Heart Feast day. Our friends from Sacred Heart Thorndon Cathedral School joined us for a beautiful Mass. Then we had a lovely cupcake and had a play together. After morning tea the whole school walked down to the Lighthouse Movie Theatre and watched the Leggo movie. What a special day we had.

The Fun and Learning Never Stops in Tui

This week we have had several great learning experiences apart from our normal programme. On Monday Lola's Mum Phoebe came to school to show us a slide show of her adventures in Africa. We learnt loads of facts about the animals she saw over there. Ruru and Kea joined us and everyone was buzzing afterwards with what they had seen and learnt. Thanks Phoebe!

On Tuesday we caught the bus into the huge Kilbirnie ASB Complex, and joined 600 other students in a morning of exhausting fun games. We all received free T- Shirts and wore ourselves out with the 10 games we learnt. The initiative was run by Athletics NZ and sponsored by NZ Post, it was an amazing event and we were very lucky to be chosen as one of the participating schools.

On Wednesday Constable Blue came to talk to us about road safety. We all practiced 'Stop, Look, Listen and Decide' at our school crossing. Mrs Pennington was shocked at the amount of cars who did not stop for us and that was with a policeman in a bright yellow coat. Crossing the road is such an important lesson to learn and one that we really need to practice with our family.

The Great Whanau Read Off

My favourite time of Book Week was the whanau read off. The aim was to get as many children as possible to have someone from their whanau to read to at school on Wednesday afternoon. We had uncles, mums, dads, grandparents, big brothers, sisters and cousins and special friends. The whole school was busy reading and it was fantastic.

More Fun during Book Week

Throughout the week we had several 'Guest Readers' come and read books to us. We loved them all. On Friday we ended the week with a whole school Discovery Time and a book character parade. We all dressed up as a character from a book and looked fantastic.

Day 2 of Book Week in Tui Class

Today was a day for visiting libraries. Before lunch we visited our school library and we found that our fantastic librarian Anne and Ms Delahunty had been very busy and the library was over flowing with exciting books, displays and competitions.

Here we are looking at the book display from the children's bookshop in Kilbirnie. If we fell in love with a book Mrs Pennington wrote the title out for us to take home to our whanau, maybe we might get a special present for Christmas!

After lunch we headed out in the rain to Petone Library. Sarah the friendly librarian read us 2 books and we talked about what different things the library has to offer us. Then we did more reading of their lovely books. We loved it so much we are planning on taking our families there one day.

Book Week kicks off with wonderful Buddy Reading

Yes it's Book week at Sacred Heart and we have a week full with lots of exciting book related activities. Tui Class buddy up with a Year 5 & 6 class called Pukeko. Our buddies sit next to us in church, read with us every fortnight and become firm friends. Here we are reading with them on Monday afternoon.
